Start Date

            03/01/2016

Last Date to Apply

Review will begin 31 January 2015 and will remain open until filled.

Description

Two (2) seasonal biological technicians are needed to help with a study of angling methods and behaviors related to incidental sea turtle capture. Large numbers of sea turtles are caught by recreational anglers each year on the Mississippi coast.  This study is an effort to identify where the areas for reduction in turtle catch or mitigation may lie. Job duties will include (but are not limited to) traveling to angler access locations (e.g., fishing piers), monitoring and interviewing anglers, and data collection and entry. Each clerk will work a 40 hour week and will include nights and weekends. Job starts in March 2016 and ends in October 2016.

Qualifications

Applicants should have graduated from or be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in fisheries or wildlife biology, ecology, wildlife management, or related natural resource field. Preference will be given to applicants with experience conducting angler or creel surveys. Applicants will be expected to survey anglers, identify gears used, and interact well with the general public. Qualified applicants must be able to work independently including nights and weekends on a randomized schedule (40hrs per week), in variable weather conditions (it’s the deep south = hot and steamy), and record data accurately and legibly. We will provide training on administering surveys and identifying gears (hook types, lines, baits, etc), but experience is a plus. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a motor vehicle record check.
